Fukien Tea Bonsai
Tending the Fukien Tea Bonsai
The Fukien tea is a tree that originated in the Fuji province of China. It is a small tropical evergreen tree with dark green leaves that grows in a way to give a thick bushy appearance. This makes it a very suitable tree for growing as a fukien tea bonsai. The tree produces small white flowers in the spring after which the flowers develop into green berries that eventually turn dark red and can be used to brew tea.
The tree can be propagated from seed or cuttings. The seedlings should be grown for about a year and then they are ready for developing as bonsai trees. Just like all bonsai trees, Fukien tea bonsai will require delicate handling and care to develop. The major considerations when tending the bonsai are:
Temperature - The Fukien tea bonsai requires warm temperatures for optimal growth though it has been found that it is not adversely affected by the low winter temperatures. However it thrives best at 55 - 70°F.
Sunlight - The plant requires plenty of sunlight so be sure to place in near a window. It is critical to ensure that it gets at least one hour of sunshine, especially early in the morning.
Watering - This is one of the crucial parameters when caring for the Fukien tea bonsai. It should be kept well watered at all times. Avoid overwatering which can lead to yellowing of the leaves as well as letting the soil dry out completely.
Feeding - The fukien bonsai can be fed every two weeks but the frequency is reduced to once a month during the winter months. Apply fertilizer occasionally but be careful not to over fertilize. It thrives best in rich well draining organic soils.
Pruning - The fukien has a dense growth habit and frequent pruning is necessary to maintain the bonsai. New shoots should be pruned when they have achieved 6 to 8 leaves. Due to the small size, normally hand pruning is adequate.
Repotting - The fukien tea bonsai needs to be repotted every 2 to 3 years during spring as this is the time growth begins. During this time, root pruning is also done. Use a basic soil mix that is well draining and rich in organic matter.
Pests and diseases - The Fukien tea bonsai tree is susceptible to pests such as aphids, bugs and scales. They are very sensitive to pesticide application and so prevention is better. Carrying out frequent visual inspection will ensure you are able to detect any pest infestation early enough. In case of heavy infestation, use a very dilute pesticide solution. There are no known diseases that affect the tree.
Tending the Fukien tea bonsai tree can be quite a challenge. This is because it is a tropical tree and so sensitive to light and temperature parameters. Once you understand its needs, you will do fine. The great beauty it gives once it is well maintained is definitely worth the effort.
