Bonsai Gardening
Bonsai Gardening Tips
Bonsai gardening has been practiced for many years. It originally started in China and then was adopted by the Japanese over a thousand years ago. The literal meaning for bonsai is tree in a tray. Bonsai gardening involves growing a miniaturized form of any perennial tree. The miniaturization is achieved from training the tree by pruning, cutting and shaping. This ancient art form was mainly practiced as a type of meditation or contemplation device that focuses a viewer’s thoughts. For the grower, bonsai was said to provide an outlet and pleasure.
Gardening is supposed to be a good stress relieving activity for the gardener. This is one of the reasons many people are trying their hand at bonsai gardening. City dwellers who are especially exposed to the stresses of daily living but do not have the space to grow a full garden can really benefit from bonsai gardening.
The types of trees that are preferred for bonsai gardening are those trees that have small leaves and good looking branches and trunk. Bonsai can be grown indoor and outdoor. The preference for indoor bonsai is the trees that also flower at some point.
Bonsai is not an easy hobby to take back and requires a great deal of perseverance. Beginners are advised to start with a beginner friendly bonsai tree. These are trees that will not require too much work or can survive some neglect or inexperienced hands. Some good trees to start with are the Japanese maple, the juniper tree, Chinese elm and the cherry blossom tree.
A bonsai tree can be grown from seeds or tree cuttings. You can also purchase a readymade bonsai tree from tree nurseries and continue to train it. If you are new to bonsai gardening, it is a good idea to avoid starting the tree from seeds. It may be very difficult and lead you to give up.
Taking care of a bonsai tree is way more complicated than taking care of ordinary houseplants. The bonsai has special needs due to the miniaturization and the fact that it is grown in a pot or tray. Taking care of it will therefore require ensuring that the soil is well drained, the roots have room and the soil is well fertilized. As it grows, the tray or pot will need to be changed. You will also need to keep pruning it and shaping it so that it maintains a particular shape and remains miniaturized.
There are also weather considerations in bonsai gardening. Growing bonsai may involve growing a tree indoors that typically grows outdoors. The gardener should therefore take extra special care that the tree is getting the right temperatures and exposure to sunlight. You can try to grow a tree that is local to increase chances of success.
