Ancient Bonsai Trees

The ancient bonsai art form is said to have originated in China many centuries ago even though most people associate bonsai to Japan. Japan adopted a lot of things from China including bonsai tree growing. The reason Japan is regarded as the birthplace of ancient bonsai is perhaps because they took the simple art form the Chinese were practicing and made it into the more advanced art form it is today. The Japanese are credited to being the ones who made the bonsai an indoor plant as well as the original outdoor plant.

For a long time, ancient bonsai was only practiced in the east. It was only later, towards the end of the 19th Century that bonsai became well known to other people in Europe and the United States. This was in part because the Japanese were exhibiting their ancient bonsai trees in international festivals.

Another reason that led to the increase in the interest in this particular art form was the translation to English of books written about bonsai trees and how to grow them. People, other than the Japanese also started to write books on this interesting art form. Ancient bonsai as an art is now practiced the world over by all types of people for different reasons. Some people grow bonsai as a hobby while others are more serious about it and grow bonsai for profit.

Japan is still the country associated with growing bonsai and it is possible to buy bonsai from this country. There are a large number of nurseries in Japan dedicated to the nurturing and export of bonsai to the rest of the world. Bonsai tree nurseries are not only found in Japan but also in many other parts of the world that ancient bonsai is practiced.

Originally bonsai trees were limited to a few tree species which were native to Japan such as the Japanese maple, azalea, pine tree or the cherry tree. Today, almost all types of trees can be grown successfully as bonsai such as cypress tree, cedar tree, Australian grapevine, fig tree and many other types of trees. There are also a number of different styles of bonsai tree today which have evolved over the years.

Bonsai has different meanings for different people. It is a major symbol of Japanese identity and culture while for others it is a beautiful addition to their garden or living room. Whatever the bonsai represents, it is a very beautiful art form and is likely to be around for a very long time to come.
